First, let's talk about the body of the device. It is one of things Galaxy Tab 10.1 needs to be worked upon with. Compared to the I-Pad 2, the body of the Galaxy tab feels much cheaper with the use of plastic at its back and hence feels a bit uncomfortable in the hands. It is currently available in only black color with Aluminium at the edges.
Firstly, let's talk about the screen. Its 10.1 inch PLS display screen with a resolution of 120*800 is something SAMSUNG should be proud of. It is something we felt was one of the limitations of the I-Pad 2 with its low resolution. Multimedia is a delight on Galaxy Tab 10.1 with its super clear screen and the speakers on its sides, which, by the way, are also pretty decent and capable of producing deep bass.
Coming to the innards of the tab, it is powered with an Nvidia Tegra 2 1 GHz dual core chip. So, there are absolutely no problems regarding speed in the device. There is no microSD crad slot in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but an internal memory of 16/32/64 GB has been provided. In fact, the lack of slots is one of the major issues in the Tab. We hope SAMSUNG notice this shortcoming and look into it.
The camera of the device is a great asset to it. The 8MP back camera is capable of taking quite decent pics and video quality is also very good. A shortcoming we found in the camera was lack of zoom feature. Also, the camera showed lags while taking still pics. There is also a 2 MP front camera at the top of the screen. in the middle.
It has been provided with standard Android v3.1(Honeycomb). The OS is quite good and there are not many problems associated with the OS. The tab contains standard Android features along with other SAMSUNG apps. One app that stand out in the tab is the Pulse. Pulse is a news aggregator that organizes news items into small previews, categorized into news, social (with Facebook functionality), entertainment, and so on, usually accompanied with a pic. Tapping on a blurb opens the entire article. The fast performance and straightforward interface made this a welcome default app.
Overall, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great device and is the only tablet device that even comes close to the I-Pad. But still, the I-Pad is the ruler of the tablets and Galaxy tab comes second. But, if you want an Android tablet, it is probably the best choice.
