As BlackBerrys go, this one is fairly slick looking, with a nod to modern design elements such as a more squared-off and narrower shape than its predecessors.
Even though it's the latest BlackBerry, the fact that it's following more or less the same old format makes it look quite old compared with the Android, iPhone and Windows Phone crowd. Unless you're a BlackBerry addict you might you might not even notice its a new phone.
We appreciate solid keys in the physical QWERTY for the feedback they give compared with touch keyboards, the 9790's is a little too densely packed and makes typing uncomfortable at times.
Build quality is reasonably good and although some may dislike the small screen size there's no denying the image quality it delivers is amazingly crisp, bright and sharp. It sports a 2.45-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with very good sensitivity, multi-touch capability, a 480x360 pixel reolution and a pixel density of 245 pixels-per-inch.
It's running Blackberry OS 7. Power isn't an issue here, as BlackBerry 7 isn't a particularly demanding platform and RIM has a habit of optimising its processor setups very well anyway.
Inside is a single core 1GHz Marvel processor, which ticks over nicely when backed up by 768MB of RAM. We didn't experience any stuttering or slowdown while navigating through the interface, and responsiveness from the touchscreen and trackpad controls was smooth as silk.
There's 8GB of storage and this is expandable via micro SD cards by up to 32GB. Connectivity is catered for with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Micro USB, GPS and NFC.
The camera is reasonable, though, not spectacular. It's a 5-megapixel shutter with a 2592x1944 pixel resolution, LED flash, autofocus, touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection, digital zoom and image stabilisation. Video capture is VGA quality, quite average.
Sadly, that's pretty much where the positive part of the story ends. While BlackBerry phones were technically the first ‘smartphones' this really doesn't feel like one. It feels like some ambiguous midway point between feature phone and smartphone - the missing link of phone evolution, if you can imagine.
BlackBerry OS 7 is simply not an intuitive system, the layout is noisy and haphazard, while controlling how you interact with the device is awkward and clumsy. It feels dated.BlackBerry App World is not the barren wasteland many would have you believe, but there's nowhere near the level of choice and variety found elsewhere and what there is comes across as generally unimpressive.
Overall, no mistake, it's a well put together phone. It can run decent apps and that too very well, but the front end is simply too dense. The technology in the background is sound but BlackBerry OS 7's obsolete nature paralyzes the whole phone.
